Journal of Chemical Education, v83 n2 p296 Feb 2006
Dynamic NMR makes use of the effect of chemical exchanges on NMR spectra to study kinetics and thermodynamics. An advanced physical chemistry lab experiment was developed to study the intramolecular exchange processes of EDTA (the disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) metal complexes. EDTA is an important chelating agent, used in complexometric titrations. EDTA complexes of Sc[superscript 3+], Y[superscript 3+], and La[superscript 3+] show slow exchange at room temperature and increased exchange rates at high temperature.
