The Whale House of the Chilkat: Community House of the Gaanaxteidi Clan of Klukwan, Alaska.
Manning, Thomas; Knecht, Elizabeth
This collection of photographic plates and drawings provides a visual record of a communal house of the Chilkat clan of southeast Alaska's Tlingit Tribe. The packet contains written descriptions of the history, interior design, living arrangements, and decorations of the Whale House. These illustrations of traditional Tlingit art and architecture are based on Lt. George T. Emmon's description of the interior of the Whale House in 1885. Also shown in the drawings are examples of household activities and conditions typical at that time. Interior features described and/or illustrated are the "Rain Screen,""Raven Post,""Woodworm Post,""Black Skin Post," and "Sea Creature Post." Six examples of clan crest designs representing the raven, eagle, wolf, killer whale, frog, and bear are included with brief descriptions of the important characteristics usually incorporated in their design.
