A Reflective Conversation with Marianne Kuzujanakis M.D.: Intricacies of Giftedness
Shaughnessy, Michael F.
Gifted Education International, v33 n1 p76-86 Jan 2017
In this reflective conversation, Marianne Kuzujanakis, a pediatrician and homeschool educator to a profoundly gifted child, discusses her involvement with gifted kids, which began when she approached Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG), a nonprofit gifted support organization. She became fully active in supporting the gifted after her child's needs were unmet by educators and other professionals. Her goal was to begin a dialogue connecting the gifted field to the medical field, with the goal of bringing about a clearer understanding of gifted children. Through her initial involvement with SENG as a volunteer, she worked with several SENG members to develop a project to focus on outreach to health care professionals. That project is now known as the "SENG Misdiagnosis Initiative." Marianne responds to questions about the following: the "SENG Misdiagnosis Intitative"; emotional needs of gifted children and adolescents; what parents need to be aware of in terms of gifted kids; how well the schools are servicing gifted children in terms of their counseling needs; and what parents ask her about their gifted children.
