Business School Learning Goals: The Legal and Regulatory Context of Organizations in a Global Economy
Siedel, George J.
Journal of Legal Studies Education, v34 n2 p325-330 Sum 2017
AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) is the premier accrediting body for business schools. Of the thousands of business schools worldwide, fewer than five percent have met the high standards for AACSB accreditation. The latest version of AACSB's accreditation standards was adopted in 2013 and updated in 2016. One section of the standards relates to "Learning and Teaching." This section begins by noting the importance of learning goals: "High-quality business schools have processes for determining for each degree program learning goals that are relevant and appropriate... " Under "Definitions" AACSB provides greater detail: "Learning goals state the educational expectations for each degree program. They specify the intellectual and behavioral competencies a program is intended to instill. In defining these goals, the faculty members clarify how they intend for graduates to be competent and effective as a result of completing the program." The standards also discuss the development of a curriculum designed to achieve the learning goals, including learning about the legal and regulatory "contexts of organizations in a global society." This article provides five learning goals observed by the Full-Time MBA Program at Bloomington, a leader in defining learning goals and assurance of learning assessment. The article also provides eight questions designed to assist other business schools when developing their learning goals relating to the legal and regulatory context of business.
