Community-Based Mentorships for Gifted and Talented. Final Report.

The final report of a program offering community-based mentorships for secondary level gifted and talented students contains information on 11 model projects located in the West, Midwest, and Northeast. Offered is a rationale for the use of mentors to provide instruction and role models for gifted students. Criteria for selection of the model projects and students are explained. Summary descriptions are given of the following model programs: Project LEARN (Connecticut), The Creative Arts Community (Connecticut), The Law Institute (New York), Executive High School Internships (Massachusetts and Connecticut), Heritage of Art (Minnesota), Visions of the City (Minnesota), The Community Involvement Project (Minnesota), Program for the Academically Talented (California), Del Mar School Community Mentor Project (California), Apprenticeships in Career Exploration (California), and The Switching Yard (California). Described are dissemination activities including workshops held in each of the three regions, publication of a newsletter, and visitation of the projects. Evaluation information (primarily based on observational and anecdotal materials) for each of the projects is summarized. Appended are a discussion of youth participation, statistics on numbers of students and teachers directly affected by the mentorship program, and sample anecdotal material. (DB)
