Some Significant Experiments in Vocational Training. (Surveys Conducted in 1977).
Council for Cultural Cooperation, Strasbourg (France).
A symposium was held to discuss the question, How and to what extent is technical and vocational education in Europe encouraging occupational mobility? Following the symposium, a series of visits was conducted to view innovative practices and experiments concerning this question; countries visited included Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and Spain. A questionnaire was completed by each visiting team and then widely distributed in the countries visited so that replies could be prepared for the visit reports. (The text of each country's questionnaire and each reply are included in this report.) Overall the findings were that all the new systems (1) have a common core and grouped training ending with specialization; (2) provide all-round training or at least a balance between general and vocational education; (3) prepare for social integration, some through traditional courses, others more actively; (4) allow for differentiation of length of training, either in the length of training cycles, through options, or through the permeability of the system; and (5) provide for a flexibility which is at least more extensive. In conclusion, questions were raised concerning the lack of originality, the importance of attitudes, and the meaning of "sound" technical and vocational education. (BM)
