Military Experience Directed into Health Careers. Final Report.
Health Research and Educational Fund of New Jersey, Princeton, NJ.
Operation MEDIHC's (Military Experience Directed into Health Careers) final report is presented which firmly establishes the need for its purpose, which is providing a meaningful career continuation for medical personnel who were trained while serving in the military service. It is reported that the New Jersey MEDIHC Program experienced a difficult time getting off the ground. However, in December of 197l, the MEDIHC Program began to implement the objectives of the program. It established a success rate of 48.7 percent, and New Jersey has a total of 1,088 applicants. Contents of this report provide a complete definition and evaluation of the program; also provided are statistical data and all the forms and questionnaires used in the program. It is concluded that there was a definite need for the MEDIHC Program in New Jersey for both veterans and civilians. This is proven by a 48.5 percent placement rate. Openings existed constantly in the fields of physical therapy, medical laboratory technology, respiratory technology, radiologic technology, and medical record technology. These findings eventually served as a basis for the Expanded MEDIHC Program. It was suggested that if another serviceman's and/or veterans program is ever started, an educational program among military commanders, information services offices and education counselors is vital to insure that MEDIHC personnel have access to the military bases and separating personnel. Tables, questionnaires and official communications tools used by the project are included. (LC)
