Child Care Training Needs Assessment: A Report on the Training Needs of Child Care Workers in Seventeen Agencies in the SUNYA Catchment Area.
Armstrong, Mary; And Others
An assessment study was conducted to compile a comprehensive view of the training needs of child care workers in eastern upstate New York. A Needs Assessment Questionnaire was distributed to 539 child care workers, and 65% were returned. The questionnaires concerned demographic, specific job-related, and training-related information. In addition, interviews were conducted with 92 child care workers from 17 agencies, 34 agency administrators and 21 clinical staff. Interview questions focused on role and task definitions, problems, training needs, and current in-service training. Results include the following: 91% of the respondents expressed interest in additional training and 89% saw a need for a training program in the area; 63% said they would prefer college-credit training. Topics given high priority were human development and behavior disorders, confrontation, discipline and control, the team approach, group skills, and separation. Special needs frequently mentioned concerned the changing role of women and minority group children and families.
