Dimensions of the Independent Sector: A Statistical Profile. Second Edition.
Hodgkinson, Virginia Ann; Weitzman, Murray S.
The second in a biennial series of statistical profiles of the independent sector (voluntary sector, third sector, or nonprofit sector) describes and charts the activities of groups and individuals associated with this sector. Included are voluntary organizations, foundations, the social responsibility programs of corporations, and people who contribute time and money. The data from which this information was drawn includes a variety of public and private sources, including census data, analyses of tax returns and national surveys of volunteerism. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the independent sector and its place in the U.S. economy (national income, employment and earnings, comparison of trends). Chapter 2 summarizes the total sources and uses of support for the independent sector (trends in sources of support, other income, the value of volunteer time, government support). Chapter 3 provides a detailed description and analysis of the total private sources of support, including individual giving, volunteering, foundation giving, and corporate contributions. Chapter 4 provides profiles (including employment, funds and expenditures) for each of these subsectors: health services; education and research; religious organizations; social services; civic, social and fraternal organizations; arts and cultural organizations; foundations; and legal services. Appendix A describes the framework and methodology of this study and the gaps in the information. Appendix B provides a glossary of terms. An index is also provided. (KM)
