More Discussion Activities To Develop Skills in Intercultural Communication for Japanese University Students in EFL.
Kresovich, Brant M.
Bulletin of College of Education University of the Ryukyus, n35 pt1 p115-30 1989
Ten speaking and listening activities designed to improve the intercultural communication skills of intermediate and advanced learners of English are presented. The activities are based on seven goals of cultural instruction: (1) sense of culturally controlled behavior; (2) interaction of language and social variables such as gender, age, and social background; (3) conventional behavior in mundane situations; (4) emotional associations that cultures assign to certain words and phrases; (5) the ability to judge credibility of cultural generalizations and stereotypes; (6) how to locate, organize, and evaluate information about another culture; and (7) development of sympathy, tolerance, respect, and other positive attitudes. For each activity, information is provided on the target level, time required, goal, language skill targeted, necessary materials, procedures, remarks, and acknowledgement of source. Activities address the following topics: what culture is; culture shock; communication rules among Japanese and Americans; language, gender, and age; everyday expressions; interjections; gift-giving customs; proverbs; cultural nuances of words and phrases; and generating generalities.
