The Education of Asylum Seekers: Some UK Case Studies
Reakes, Angharad
Research in Education, v77 p92-107 May 2007
The body of literature examining the educational needs of asylum-seeker children is limited. Extending the body of knowledge has become increasingly important because of the increasing number of asylum seekers in the UK, with significant implications for local education authorities and schools. The main focus of the research was the situation in Wales. The project involved five case studies of LEAs, three in Wales and two comparative LEAs, one in Scotland and one in England. The research identified a number of implications. Although the arrival of asylum seekers was perceived as a positive experience by LEAs and schools, the children brought with them a range of needs for which existing procedures were not always sufficient or appropriate.
