Children and youth develop the ability to surmount difficult life challenges through a combination of external supports and internal strengths. Positive peers can contribute substantially to growth in resilient coping and problem-solving skills. Positive Peer Culture (PPC) programs are designed to strengthen supportive social bonds, competence, self-efficacy, and self-worth--thereby fostering resilience. In 2002, Positive Peer Culture groups were implemented in the St. Augustinusheim [St. Augustine Home] and its related independent living programs, day groups, school, and training workshops. Located in Ettlingen, Germany, St. Augustine Home serves adolescent boys who show difficult behavioral problems or delinquency. A three-year evaluation of PPC was conducted from 2003 to 2006. Quantitative data were drawn from questionnaires completed by young people and staff, and qualitative data came from interviews with students, staff, parents, and external experts.
