Parent-Child-Caregiver: The Attachment Triangle
Caldwell, Bettye
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n161 p75-78 Jan-Feb 2005
One of the most consistently recurring themes in great literature is the love triangle--Arthur and Guinevere and Lancelot, Tristan and Isolde and King Mark, and countless others. No one has produced an immortal story about it; but a love triangle plays itself out day after day in the lives of parents, young children, and caregivers. In this article, the author shares some insights on how to resolve the competition between parents and caregivers for the love and loyalty of the child. He further emphasizes that the attachments developed in child care "should be qualitatively different." The caregiver attachment should be less intense because, if for no other reason, it will be of shorter duration. Thus, keeping that distinction in mind helps avoid open conflict with parents.
