The Individual and Ethnic Identity: A Sourcebook for Students.
Brownstein Henry H.; And Others
This student sourcebook, developed by an ethnic identity project, contains quotations of 51 individuals from varying ethnic backgrounds and with varying degrees of ethnicity. Appropriate for secondary and higher education, the primary objective is to illustrate that people who identify with ethnic groups are individuals and not merely members of the group. The book is divided into three sections: immigration and assimilation, individual ethnic identity, and ethnic group relations. It is arranged in question-answer form, a result of interviews conducted by project members. Questions examine why people originally came to the United States, whether they still come for the same reasons, what it is like to leave the nation of one's birth, how people identify with an ethnic group, how people express their ethnic heritage, and the sources of prejudice. Statistics about periods of immigration to the United States and immigrants by country of birth (1821-1977) and a list of laws and programs affecting immigration to the United States are included.
