Graphic Novels: A Scaffolding Strategy for Young Writers
Wilkinson, Caryn
Reading Teacher, v69 n4 p401 Jan-Feb 2016
Young readers notice details in pictures and images with great precision, yet young writers often struggle in adding enough detail to their writing. Third-grade students use a published author's scene from a graphic novel as a scaffold for storytelling. Partners notice the detail in the images; they take turns orally telling the story, and finally compose their narrative on paper. The graphic novel images provide a foundation for detail that supports many writers. These young writers show energy and a greater willingness to try new techniques when using this support.
