The Relationship between Literacy and Depression and Anxiety in Homeless Adults
Holland, Mark Edward
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The University of the Rockies
Homelessness is a problem that has correlating social, psychological, and health problems. The pathways that lead to homelessness are plentiful and varied, as are the risk factors that are associated with chronic homelessness. Much of the research that has been completed with homeless individuals has focused on substance use or psychological disorders. However, one area of homelessness that has not been adequately addressed is the area of literacy among the homeless. The implications of illiteracy on the psychological well-being of the homeless individual were the focus of this study. Specifically, this study sought to identify regression models that significantly predicted depression and anxiety by using prose, document, and quantitative literacy as predictor variables. Homeless adults were recruited from sites in a rural Midwestern state to complete an interview, as well as measures of literacy, depression, and anxiety. Sixty-one adults completed the study. Twin multiple regression analyses were conducted on the data--one to identify a regression model predicting depression and the other to identify a regression model to predict anxiety. Though the models did not significantly predict depression or anxiety, information regarding demographic data and identified data trends was highlighted for further research. In addition, directions for the treatment of homeless individuals were identified. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
