The Effect of Hyperventilation on the Ability To Hold One's Breath: Testing the Influence of Beliefs versus Physiology.
Given, Mac F.
American Biology Teacher, v59 n1 p229-31 Apr 1997
Reports on a simple classroom exercise that investigates whether students' beliefs of what they think should happen influences their measurements. The exercise also provides a framework for discussing the challenges that human belief systems bring to the discipline of using the scientific process. Results suggest that students' preconceived notions regarding hyperventilation are more influential than actual physiology. (AIM)
