Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute: Its Evolution and Contribution to Education as a Federal Land-Grant College. Bulletin, 1923, No. 27
Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
Hampton Institute has developed an educational technique in several lines which is of interest especially to those institutions that are still trying to find their way under difficulties and that for lack of vision as well as lack of support are unable to reach the high ideals of training which have resulted from the careful working out of the Hampton program. In ceasing its relationship to the Federal Government, Hampton depends upon its own resources and those of its friends. Nevertheless, Hampton, in view of the long-continued Federal support, can give to the general public the benefit of a statement of her stewardship and by doing so be of great assistance to other institutions with similar problems in industrial and vocational education. The contributions provided in this bulletin aim to give briefly the growth and development of the educational practices which have led to the present program. The following chapters are included: (1) Educational contribution of Hampton Institute (Walton C. John); (2) The influence of Hampton (William Howard Taft); (3) History and educational philosophy (James E. Gregg); (4) Administrative organization (William H. Scoville); (5) Financial history (Frank K. Rogers); (6) Record office (Myrtilla J. Sherman); (7) The academy and normal school (Henry J. Doerman); (8) The Whittier Training School (Sarah J. Walter); (9) The agricultural school (Warren K. Blodgett); (10) The trade school (William Anthony Aery); (11) The home-economics school (Carrie Alberta Lyford); (12) The business school (Ethel C. Buckman); (13) Education of Indians (Caroline W. Andrus); (14) Physical education for boys (Charles H. Williams); (15) Physical education for girls (Olive B. Rowell); (16) Discipline (Allen W. Washington); (17) Extension Work (J. L. Blair Buck); (18) General aspects of growth (George P. Phenix); (19) The museum (Cora M. Folsom); (20) The publication office (Jane E. Davis); and (21) Hampton's influence (William Anthony Aery). An index is included. (Contains 20 footnotes and 13 plates.) [Prepared under the direction of Walton C. John, United States Bureau of Education. With an introduction by William Howard Taft, Chief Justice of the United States. Best copy available has been provided.]
