This report updates a 1981 paper on adult education in Britain that was part of a series published by the European Centre for Leisure and Education. It includes five chapters. Chapter 1 provides statistics on the population and labor force of Britain and describes its education and government systems. Chapter 2 provides a brief description of the structure and financing of adult education. Chapter 3 describes the evolution of the theory and practice of adult education in Britain. Chapter 4 describes programs and policies, including how national policies are determined. It describes the Local Educational Authority (LEA) vocational sector, occupational training and the Manpower Services Commission, the LEA nonvocational sector, adult basic education, the Workers' Educational Association, long-term residential colleges, the universities, trade union education, the open university, the informal voluntary sector, the private sector, broadcasting, other agencies of adult education, and the auxiliaries of adult education. Chapter 5 presents conclusions on the plurality of adult education in Britain. Each chapter includes references. (CML)
