Higher Educational Aspirations of African American Male High School Students
Kester, Jonathan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
This quantitative study examined the influence of family, school, and peers on the educational aspirations of African American male high school students in the ninth and tenth grade who live in a small Midwest town. Increasing the higher education aspirations of African American males is the first step needed to attend college, which according to many studies is the answer to solving some of the major problems that impact African American males, such as living in poverty, high unemployment, and high incarceration rates. The research questions were answered through a 53-survey instrument that was administered at My Brother's Keeper, Inc. mentoring center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. A hierarchical linear regression showed that financial support, educational environment, and peer support were significant predictors of educational aspirations of African American male high school students. The research from this study recommended an increase in parental involvement, small group counseling, and cultural competency in the classroom. The overall goal of this research was to assist educational policy makers, researchers, and practitioners to better serve African American males in the college decision-making process.
