Designed to inform Indian students about health career opportunities, this handbook prepared by the Association of American Indian Physicians describes the great need for more American Indians as health professionals and gives information on specific health fields, preparation for health professions, and assistance available (financial and other). Health fields defined and briefly discussed are medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine, osteopathy, podiatry, and public health professions. Areas in which health professionals may work are identified as private or public practice, community health departments, school health, mental health, research, rehabilitation, medical social workers, and hospitals. A section on preparing for a health career deals with secondary school through specialized training, explaining necessary courses and available financial aid. Steps to take during ninth and tenth grades are outlined, and a monthly schedule for high school junior and senior years covers required tests, job possibilities, college choices, catalogs, and financial aids. Health careers not requiring college graduation are treated briefly before a more thorough guide to college training and preparation, including how to apply to medical school. Programs for Indian students, financial planning tips, aid and information sources, and a recommended reading list are given. (RS)
