President Barack Obama is wasting no time in unfolding his plan to provide health coverage for all Americans. He started in February by signing legislation to reinstate the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which expands eligibility criteria to provide 4 million more children access to health care. This first step is one of many needed to meet his goal of ensuring that health care becomes a right for all, rather than a privilege for some. Obama's plan is complex and multifaceted, addressing issues ranging from affordability and accessibility of care to cost and quality control. This author notes, however, that missing from his plan is any explicit reference to the central role that must be played by a largely hidden, but firmly established and key component of the nation's health care system: The army of school nurses and school-based health providers who have, for more than 100 years, provided primary and acute care to millions of uninsured children. In examining the Obama plan, and how school nurses and other school-based health providers can and already do contribute to meeting its goals, the author presents some of the president's major themes of health care reform with an analysis of school health providers' current and potential future roles in meeting these goals.
