Partnering for Health
Ammerman, Adrienne
Principal Leadership, v12 n2 p34-35, 38-41 Oct 2011
A little-known health care safety net plays a big role for young people across the U.S. More than 1,900 school-based health centers (SBHCs) provide access to care--primary health, mental health and counseling, family outreach, and chronic illness management--to nearly 1.7 million children and adolescents. SBHCs are partnerships between schools and health care organizations that serve students on school campuses. SBHCs provide this care without concern for the students' ability to pay. Most educators are aware that poor health has a direct and negative impact on students' success in school and in life. SBHCs are known to improve access to health care for children and adolescents, as well as reduce emergency room rates and Medicaid expenditures. Three stakeholders from the Perspectives-Calumet school campus in Chicago, Illinois, offer their views of the value they see in their SBHC and how they collaborate to bring health care services to children and adolescents.
