This handbook is intended to provide administrators, vocational counselors, and teachers with a convenient reference of entry-level jobs. The handbook organizes information on over 3,000 jobs into the nine occupational clusters that have been identified by the Department of Labor in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT). Jobs are organized according to the following clusters: health care; clerical and sales; service; agriculture, forestry, and fishery; industrial processing; machine trades; benchwork; structural work; and packaging, transportation, mining, and miscellaneous occupations. Each job description contains the following basic components: job title and DOT job code number; a lead statement containing information on such topics as worker actions, purpose of worker actions, tools and materials used, product made, and instructions followed; a list of the five main duties performed in the job; functional competencies required of workers in such areas as physical strength, manual dexterity, math and reading grade level, degree of interaction with people, and degree of perceptual discrimination required; and information on any hazardous jobs or unpleasant working conditions associated with the job. Also included are Bureau of Labor Statistics projected employment trends for the 1980s in each of the nine aforementioned occupational areas. (MN)
