The Jews in America 1621-1970. A Chronology and Fact Book.
Sloan, Irving J., Comp.
This volume, one of a series of ethnic chronologies, notes significant contributions Jewish individuals made toward American civilization from 1621 to 1970 and is divided into three major parts: Part one, "The Jews in America", is a chronological outline of talented and noteworthy Jewish people and events by which they helped strengthen the United States. Contributions in the fields of art, science, literature, music and in high political offices are mentioned. Part two, "Selected Documents of American Jewry", provides primary materials offering historical evidence of Jewish life. These documents demonstrate that, though Americans acknowledged the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for the minority group, the improvement of social, political, economic and religious justice for the Jews occurred gradually and sequentially. Part three, "Appendices", includes listings of the following: 1) the number and percentage of total American Jewish population by state; 2) fifteen selected and annotated bibliographic citations; 3) ten annotated films and ten filmstrips (some with teacher's guides), with prices included, dealing with American Jewish history and life; 4) nearly 250 Jewish civic organizations including year founded and location; 5) Jewish serials by state and city.
