The purpose of this study was to provide process data for school counselors, administrators, and the public, regarding school counselors' actual roles within the guidance counselor preferred job duties and actual job duties. In addition, factors including National Certification or no National Certification, years of counseling experience, and number of students per counselor were considered. The sample for this study consisted of 41 North Louisiana high school counselors that included male and female counselors from public and non-public schools. Data were collected via convenience sampling; it was used for the ease of data collection from an identified group of people (Cozby, 2001). The researcher studied the differences between the actual and preferred activities of school counselors who were National Certified and those who were not National Certified; school counselors who had been practicing school counseling for ten years or more and school counselors who had been practicing school counseling for less than ten years and school counselors with student-to-counselor ratios were equal to or less than 225 to 1 and school counselors with student-to-counselor ratios greater than 225 to 1. The null hypotheses were tested using a statistical significance of p less than 0.05. The School Counselor Activity Rating Scale [SCARS] (Scarborough, 2002) was used in this study. The SCARS "...was designed to measure how school counselors actually spend their time versus how they would prefer to spend their time in job related activities" (Scarborough, 2005). The SCARS is a survey that uses a five-point Likert-scale on two dimensions: actual activities performed (five scales) and preferred activities (five scales). A demographic information sheet was also used to collect information on the three independent variables. Statistically significant differences were found between actual and preferred job activities for all three null hypotheses. Based upon actual job activities and preferred job activities, it was concluded that there were no statistical significant differences between National Certified Counselors and those counselors who were not National Certified. There was no statistical difference between school counselors with ten years or more experience and school counselors with less than ten years experience. However, based on preferred job activities, there was statistical significance between counselors whose school had a student-to-counselor ratio equal to or less than the Louisiana state average of 225 to 1 and in schools that had a student-to-counselor ratio of more than 225 to 1.
