Jonathan Woocher is to be commended for offering his thought-provoking "big picture" account of where the field of Jewish education has been and where, if it is to be successful, it needs to be going under the conditions of life in the 21st century. Woocher's capacity to use an array of relevant perspectives and literatures to illuminate the problems and challenges he describes and to develop prescriptions intended to respond to them is nothing short of dazzling. There is much that he agrees with in Woocher's discussion--particularly, the weight he gives to powerful relationships in education, the emphasis on personal growth, and the affirmation of forms of education that are experiential, respectful of the learner's capacity to choose, and in other ways learner-centered. But the last point--the reference to learner-centered education--brings the author to the first of the concerns that surfaced in this article. Like other concerns articulated in the article, the author raises it in the hope that addressing it will be useful to Woocher in making a strong discussion even stronger. He shares some worries occasioned by Woocher's conception of Jewish education. (Contains 2 footnotes.)
