A Comparative GLOBE Study: Regional Differences in Cultural Values, Cultural Practices and Perspectives of Leadership between Research Administrators in the United States, Europe and Australasia
Sablatura, Martha Trevino
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Our Lady of the Lake University
The (GLOBE) Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Study (House, Gupta, Hanges, Javidan, and Dorfman, 2004), introduced the concept of leadership across cultures and, along with other empirical research, has shown that the status and influence of leadership vary considerably as a result of the cultural forces in different countries or regions of operation. This study builds on the important foundation of the original GLOBE Study by examining cultural values, practices and leadership behavior preferences among 529 research administrators and managers across three distinct cultural regions--United States, Europe and Australasia. Differences in nine national cultural dimensions: uncertainty avoidance, in-group collectivism, future orientation, power distance, gender egalitarianism; performance orientation; institutional collectivism, assertiveness and humane orientation are presented. It also analyzes the difference in preference for six leadership behaviors: charismatic/value-based, team-oriented leadership; participative leadership; humane-oriented; automonous, and self-protective leadership.
