Indian Games and Dances with Native Songs: Arranged from American Indian Ceremonials and Sports.
Fletcher, Alice C.
This volume describes and gives instructions for Native American dances and games as gathered by, and in some cases adapted by, an anthropologist working among native peoples at the beginning of the 20th Century. Part I contains dances and songs. The first is called "The Life of the Corn," a drama in five dances. Also included are three other dances. The songs to accompany the dances are a single line of melody written in a conventional Western treble stave, with the key and time signatures and bar lines indicated. Part II contains games grouped by type: two hazard games, five guessing games, and five ball games. Many of the games include their own songs. Diagrams show equipment, indicate how to lay out pieces, or describe where to position players. Part III concerns names and naming ceremonies (presenting a child, naming a child, taking a new name, taking an Indian name) and includes lists of names for girls, for boys, and for camps. Explanations of the cultural significance and meaning of the songs, dances, and games are included. A scholarly introduction describes the work of the anthropologist (Alice C. Fletcher), the music's influence on American composers, and a collection of recordings made around 1900 by the author and her collaborator, Francis La Flesche. (Contains 22 references.) (JB)
