Gilkey, Eschelle
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Oklahoma State University
Scope and Method of Study: This study used qualitative methods to discover the reasons and factors these African American men persisted to degree completion, while the large majority of this group fail. The participants for this study were eight African American males who have successfully graduated from an accredited, predominantly white university, in the United States. The data for this study was collected through an online survey that assessed eight non-cognitive variables and face-to-face interview(s). Use of this methodology allowed the researcher the opportunity to explore those lived experiences of successful African American men. The data collected from this study can assist colleges and universities in developing policies and programs that will enable other African American men to succeed. Findings and Conclusions: Using the assessment of variables and in-depth interview data, this study found, support of peers through friendships and organizational memberships as predominant factors for persistence and success for these African American males.
