A Home-Language Free Adult Pre-Vocational Audio-Visual Course in English-as-a-Second Language.
Smith, Philip D., Jr.
A pre-vocational English-as-a-second language course for adults was developed for the non-native speaker based upon the following assumptions: the teacher does not have to speak the language of the student; students in a class do not have to speak each others' language; the teacher need not be professionally trained in the field of teaching ESL; and since meaning must be conveyed through the use of visuals, the text is not to be used without the accompanying filmstrips. The teacher's manual, based on the audiovisual language approach developed at the Center for the Research and Training of the French Language in France, contains: an overview of the nature of language, the audiovisual method, four stages of teaching, American-English phonology, arrangements of the classroom and vocabulary for the classroom; instructions for implementing the basic dialogue curriculum units; lesson plans for units; an outline of the grammar content of each unit; an approach to the written language through teaching dictations; dialogue material; instructional games; an index of vocabulary; sections on "How to Use the Telephone,""How to Get a Job," and "How to Write a Resume"; occupational outline summaries; and a sample of a vocationally centered reading selection. The course includes 16 basic core English units and supplementary vocationally-oriented vocabulary units. An instructor's guide to supplemental filmstrip lessons on basic English reading is included.
