The RIF Guide to Encouraging Young Readers. A Fun-filled Sourcebook of over 200 Favorite Reading Activities of Kids and Parents from Across the Country, Plus an Annotated List of Books and Resources.
Graves, Ruth, Ed.
Based on the notion that reading is both fun and fundamental, this book contains a stimulating array of activities that parents can use to engage their children in reading from the toddler stage through primary school. The first section provides information on how to use the guide, and some tips for encouraging young readers. The second and major portion of the guide provides specific activities to encourage young readers, divided into several areas including the following: (1) read aloud activities, (2) ways to use the local newspaper for reading fun, (3) rainy day ideas, (4) how to use television as a springboard to reading, (5) how to use the four seasons to spark interest in reading, and (6) ideas that lead from writing to reading and back again. General age ranges are suggested for each activity and all activities allow for substitution and embellishment. The third section presents an annotated booklist of more than 200 quality publications categorized by age group. Further resources for parents and children are suggested in the final section, some with annotations, including books and periodicals for parents, booklists, magazines and book clubs for children, and relevant organizations.
