From Foster Care to Freshman Year: Foster Youths' Perspectives on the Transition and Adaptation to College
Tate, Tonya R.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fielding Graduate University
The current qualitative study explored the transition to college of youth aging out of foster care and their adaptation in the first year of college. The aim of this study was to determine the nature and quality of former foster youths' college transition experience and factors influencing their adaptation in the first year. Participants included 11 youth who had aged out of foster care and had completed at least a semester of college. Data were collected using a demographic survey and a qualitative interview consisting of questions that examined students' college transition experience, expectations of college, and their social and academic adaptation to college. Findings included 4 key themes that were originated from Schlossberg's 4S's, along with 11 subthemes generated from an inductive thematic analysis of interview data. The themes and subthemes that emerged were Self (employment status; feelings of stress and anxiety), Situation (optimizing career and life opportunities; concurrent stress; delays and disruptions in enrollment), Support (institutional resources; relational resources; financial resources), and Strategies (engagement with the campus community; finding a balance and managing time; being prepared and proactive). This study could be beneficial in learning how to best facilitate a successful college transition for this population.
