Teacher Evaluation That Works!! Second Edition
Ribas, William B.
Rowman & Littlefield Education
Creating a system for successfully supervising and evaluating the entire teaching staff of a school district is a daunting task. An effective system-wide program can only be achieved if the administrators, teachers and the teachers' association understand and attend to the educational, legal, public relations (political), and social-emotional (E.L.P.S.) of supervision and evaluation. Time and money have forced many districts to cut corners on such programs. This book offers practical and effective methods for evaluating educators based on current research and the experiences of a number of educators in some of the country's top school districts. This book, utilizing real life examples and Dr. Ribas' vast knowledge and experience of the subject, provides districts with the tools to systematically and cost effectively assess and revise their supervision and evaluation programs so they successfully address the educational, legal, political, and social-emotional (E.L.P.S.) areas. Following an introduction and "The Educational, Legal, Public Relations (Political) and Social-Emotional Processes and Standards of Supervision and Evaluation," this book is divided into the following ten chapters: (1) Ascending the E.L.P.S. (Educational, Legal, Public Relations [Political] and Social-Emotional) Toward Excellent Supervision and Evaluation; (2) District-Level Systems for Training, Coaching and Assessing an Effective Program of Supervision and Evaluation; (3) The Educational Skills and Knowledge Needed to Be an Effective Supervisor and Evaluator; (4) Sources of Observable and/or Verifiable Evidence Other Than Classroom Observations; (5) The Public Relations (Political) Skills and Knowledge Needed to Work Effectively With Teachers' Associations/Unions and Other Constituencies; (6) The Legal Processes and Standards as They Relate to Supervising and Evaluating Low-Performing Teachers; (7) Progressive Discipline; (8) Creating a Culture of Openness to Change and Receiving Feedback About Areas for Improvement; (9) Supervision and Evaluation Documents and Contract Language; and (10) Ensuring Inter-Rater Reliability Change in Your District's Supervision and Evaluation System. An index is also included. ["Teacher Evaluation That Works!!" was co-published with Ribas Publications.]
