This article discusses field tests that can be used in physical education programs. The most common field tests are anthropometric measurements, which include body mass index (BMI), girth measurements, and skinfold testing. Another field test that is gaining popularity is bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Each method has particular strengths and weaknesses. This article gives the reader insights into characteristics of these field tests. BMI (mass/height [squared]) is the least invasive field testing method, but perhaps the most flawed. Skinfold testing is the most accurate of the anthropometric methods, but it is more invasive, requiring physical touch to "pinch" the skin. BIA is a simple, safe procedure that is non-invasive, and it requires minimal skills to administer the test. BIA passes a minute electrical current through the body. Sensors within the unit measure the level of resistance to the current's flow. Among other things, the author points out the two issues that should be addressed if BIA is used for assessing body composition: hydration status and accurate measurement of height.
