Missouri Industrial and Educational Graphic Arts Survey. Final Report.
Keseman, Charles E.
The Missouri Industrial and Educational Graphic Arts (MIEGA) survey was done to determine the current status and trends of the graphic arts industry and graphic arts education in Missouri for use as the basis for the later development of secondary school graphic arts state curriculum guides. Data were collected through two status surveys in addition to an extensive review of related research and statistical data. The first survey studied the graphic arts offerings in the public secondary schools of Missouri while the second one studied the commercial graphic arts industries in Missouri. The conclusions included the following: (1) although the graphic arts offerings in Missouri's secondary schools continue to expand in the number of schools offering graphic arts, the number of courses offered, and the breadth of content, a vast majority of students receive no graphic arts instruction; (2) the graphic arts offerings generally lack a coordinated approach; (3) in many schools the graphic arts instructional content does not reflect the contemporary graphic arts industry; and (4) the vocational-technical graphic arts programs are not serving their purpose very well in the eyes of industry. (This report includes ninety-two data tables and ten implications of the findings. Two graphic communications curriculum models, several letters sent during the study, and the survey forms are appended.) (EM)
