Minority First-Generation Students' Satisfaction with Services at a Liberal Arts University in the Southeast United States

This qualitative study was performed at a liberal arts university in the southeast United States. Thirty-nine undergraduate minority first-generation students were interviewed to acquire knowledge of their satisfaction levels with four student services: tutoring, campus housing, financial aid, and career planning. The purpose of this study was to allow first generation minority students their own voice in identifying strengths and weaknesses of the support services available to first generation students. Thirty-nine minority first-generation students (15 who were satisfied with services and 15 who were dissatisfied with services) were interviewed. In addition, interviews with 7 student services personnel helped to triangulate data obtained from student interviews. Finally, the institution's IPEDs numbers for the retention of minority first-generation students were examined to obtain current retention rates for first generation minority students. Overall, students who were interviewed were satisfied with services. However, students who were dissatisfied with services were dissatisfied with housing and financial aid. Financial aid was one source of dissatisfaction because students often needed more information about loans that were available to help them stay in school. Some students were dissatisfied with maintenance problems in the dorms as well as fire alarms that went off in the early morning hours. If students do not receive enough financial aid monies to help them remain enrolled in school, it could affect retention. In addition, students may opt to transfer to colleges or universities that have better housing facilities. Other researchers need to study student satisfaction with services offered by other colleges and universities.
