Bomb Threats Taking Financial Toll
Bowman, Darcia Harris
Education Week, v24 n1 p1, 22-23 Sep 2004
Despite all its efforts to crack down on the bomb scares that disrupted classes again and again in 2003, North Carolina's Orange County district fell victim to yet another false alarm this school year, 2004. For some schools, bomb threats have become more routine than fire drills, with each incident ringing up multi-thousand-dollar tabs for emergency manpower, special equipment, makeup instructional time, and other costs. In nearly every case, the threat is just a prank, but school administrators, public-safety officials, and policymakers are not laughing. This article presents the actions taken by Orange County district in dealing with these false bomb threats.
