The Hebrew verbal system is riddled with difficulties that have caused Hebraist much consternation for centuries. The study of the Hebrew verb system is complicated further because no living informant of the language exists. Without a living witness of the language, uncovering the nuances has been limited to the corpus of written material available in the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew of the Psalter proves to be one of the most difficult areas of linguistic inquiry. This dissertation is an attempt to understand better the Hebrew verbal system through an investigation of the x-finite verb clauses in book two of the Psalter. Through the use of text-linguistic theory, the author established a method that includes a computer-assisted database in which elements deemed valuable for identifying the frequency and distribution of the x-finite clauses is identified and analyzed. The clauses investigated in this study is analyzed in relation to their usage in the individual psalms instead of as individual components. Chapter 1 offers a brief history of text-linguistics and relevant scholarship, and outlines the method for analyzing the x-finite clauses in the selected corpus. Chapter 2 outlines the data for the study and offers an overview of the frequency and distribution of the x-"yigtol" and the x-"qatal" clauses. Chapter 3 presents an analysis of all the x-finite clauses with a view to understanding how the psalmist(s) used these clauses to accomplish a variety of syntactical and textual stragegies, including clausal opposition. The x-finite clauses are analyzed as they occur in the psalms of book two. Chapter 4 provides a synthesis of the functionalities of the x-finite clauses in Pss 42-72. This synthesis is accomplished by recognizing and describing patterns in the collected data. The final chapter includes concluding observations of the overall usage of the x-finite clauses, comparisons with recent works in the area of the Hebrew verbal system, and suggestions for future research.
