Alcohol Awareness through the Arts: The Power of Dance in a College Alcohol Education Program
Carr, Pattie L.; McClellan, George S.
Journal of Dance Education, v8 n4 p128-130 2008
This article describes a new alcohol education program at Dickinson State University. The centerpiece of the program is the Alcohol Awareness Through the Arts Program. It involves dozens of students and faculty and regularly draws 400 to 450 audience members. Funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Otto Bremer Foundation, and Dickinson Community in Action, Dickinson State University annually presents a week-long series of arts performances exploring the impact of the use of alcohol on students' lives. The performances use creative writing, dance, film making, music, poetry, theater, and the visual arts to give voice to the issues of binge drinking and alcohol abuse from the students' perspectives. The dance component of this program has been extremely popular with student choreographers as well as audience members. (Contains 2 tables.)
