Development Process and Outcome Evaluation of a Program for Raising Awareness of Indirect and Relational Aggression in Elementary Schools: A Preliminary Study
Verlaan, Pierrette; Turmel, France
School Psychology Review, v39 n4 p552-568 2010
The development process of a program for raising awareness of indirect and relational aggression in elementary school children and teachers is described and a preliminary outcome evaluation of the program was conducted. The 188 participants were derived from 8 fourth- through sixth-grade elementary classes in two lower-middle-class schools from the Hauts-Cantons School Board of the Eastern Townships region in Quebec (Canada). The program was developed using a participatory action research approach to facilitate the translation of research findings into action and to ground the intervention in the needs and resources of educational settings. The initial implementation stage revealed the adaptations necessary to foster the success of this type of program in elementary schools. The program seemed to be acceptable to the vast majority of youths and teachers. Preliminary results suggested some degree of knowledge acquisition regarding certain aspects of indirect and relational aggression. Finally, the program appeared to promote small changes in social interactions among youths. The program needs to be evaluated more thoroughly with larger randomized samples.
