Racialized Aggressions and Social Media on Campus
Gin, Kevin J.; Martínez-Alemán, Ana M.; Rowan-Kenyon, Heather T.; Hottell, Derek
Journal of College Student Development, v58 n2 p159-174 Mar 2017
Using a phenomenological approach, rooted in critical theory's desire to challenge systemic structures of inequality, we explored the impact of racialized hate encountered on social media by students of color at a predominately White institution. The encounters of racialized hostility manifested as anti-Black sentiments and produced racial battle fatigue, cultural paranoia, and student calls for antiracist interventions. These findings suggest that "racialized aggression" is an appropriate framework to interpret racialized online hostilities.
