Guiding the Family: Practical Counseling Techniques. Second Edition.
Grunwald, Bernice Bronia; McAbee, Harold V.
This text on principles of Adlerian Psychology is designed for use in family counseling. It begins with an overview of Alfred Adler and his basic philosophy on human relationships. Throughout the book, as the Adlerian theory is discussed, practical application of theory is explained for counselors. Counselors must have a firm theoretical basis for their practice. Without a basic construct from which to make assumptions, counselors cannot understand nor assist those who come for help. They must first understand their client's behavior psychologically and what motivates them to behave as they do. Techniques that can be used to bring about positive changes in family relationships are detailed. The content is organized in a step-by-step process, guiding the beginning counselor in the understanding of the client and how to elicit acceptable agreements among family members. Its aim is to teach counselors how to help families establish relationships based on democratic principles that can be applied to all family members in attempts to curtail friction and alienation between parents and their children. Chapters include: (1) Adlerian Theory and Family Counseling; (2) The Counselor; (3) Basic Steps in Family Counseling; (4) Psychological Premises; (5) Diagnostic Techniques: Gathering Significant Information; (6) Corrective Measures; (7) Working with Specific Problems; (8) Counseling Adolescents; (9) Teens' Addictions and Abuse; (10) Special Families; and (11) Case Studies. Appendix A describes the family counseling center; Appendix B outlines age appropriate responsibilities for children; Appendix C is a family relationship index; Appendix D is a parent self-help checklist.
