In this study, a pencil paper performance test (PPPT) was developed and administered to an experimental group of 46 students and a control group of 48 students to determine: (1) the difference between laboratory performance and the successful completion of a laboratory course in electricity, (2) the relationship between laboratory performance as measured by the PPPT and the instructor's rating of observed laboratory performance, and (3) the relationship between laboratory performance as measured by the PPPT and achievement scores in electricity as measured by the instructor's final examination for the course. The experiment consisted of a post test only static-group comparison design, with the experimental factor consisting of exposure to information about electricity and laboratory work in electricity for a period of nine weeks. At the conclusion of the experiment, data analysis revealed that a significant difference in measured laboratory performance existed between the experimental and control groups. Data analysis for measured and rated laboratory performance and for laboratory performance and achievement revealed significant Spearman Rank Correlations. It was concluded that the successful completion of a laboratory course in electricity may be directly related to laboratory performance as measured by the PPPT. (Author/SB)
