Constructing Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Ethical Experiences of Classroom Lessons and Clinical Practice
Knowles, Amy J. B.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New York University
Ethics is an integral component of the nursing profession. This phenomenological study aimed to describe how baccalaureate nursing students experience learning ethics both in the classroom and clinical setting. The interviews in this study were conducted with eight second semester senior nursing students. Four themes emerged from analyses of the interviews: 1) Cultural Factors Affecting Professional Ethics, 2) Students' Perceptions of Marginalization in the Clinical Setting, 3) Main Student Identified Ethical Dilemmas, and 4) Facilitators and Barriers to the Implementation of Ethical Nursing Practice. The essence of these themes was a gap exists between classroom lessons in ethics and the real-life experiences of learning ethics in the clinical setting. This study can be beneficial to administrators and faculty of baccalaureate nursing programs concerned with understanding the ethical lessons and values students are taught in the curriculum, and the real-life ethical situations these students experience in their various clinical settings.
