The Wellness Factor: Embedding Wellness in the Curriculum at Ashley Hall
Murrell, Amanda; Wood, Kelly
Independent School, v72 n2 Win 2013
The authors of this article describe the Personal Awareness and Wellness Seminar (PAWS) program, which they developed at Ashley Hall (South Carolina), an all-girls K-12 school. PAWS is designed to incorporate three main areas of school and personal life: academic management and study skills, general wellness and life skills, and the college search process. It states that the school has determined seven "hallmarks"--in the form of adjectives--that are considered essential qualities for their graduates: compassionate, discerning, intelligent, purposeful, worldly, collaborative, and creative. These hallmarks guide the program as the school plans PAWS events, add activities, and engage campus speakers. Making the PAWS program central to the curriculum informs everything that is done at the school, from family-style dining to the expansion of physical education requirements, which enforces the school's commitment to physical well-being.
