The examination of ethical implications as part of intercultural communications courses and the responsibility of the instructor of these courses are discussed. Two questions are considered: Should ethics as a topic be included in courses in intercultural communications? What common problems in intercultural communication education could be in violation of ethical principles? Since class discussions always include the existence of differing perceptions, values, assumptions, and communication styles, the subject matter makes ethics hard to ignore. Also, there is the need to bring attention to reliance on written and unwritten codes in one's culture and to consider theories of ethical relativism and ethical universalism. Finally, the topic of ethics should consider the possibility of misuse and abuse of certain cultural information and skills and the responsibility that goes along with learning a new language and culture. The second question involves six classroom practices which should be scrutinized: using teaching maxims as if they were valid for all cultures; disseminating information about cultures without adding cautions to check reliability due to possibilities of change and individual differences; failing to discuss the ethics of misusing cultural information; enforcing one's own behavior and learning style in an ethnocentric manner; using a double standard of grading; and failing to recognize and/or help students work through an identity crisis.
