A handbook for academic advisers at Houston Baptist University (HBU) is presented. Attention is directed to: definitions of advising, roles of academic advisers, behavioral objectives, limitations of academic advising, adviser and advisee responsibilities, and information pertaining to specific HBU departments and regulations. Additional topics include: advisee problems, characteristics of a good adviser, adviser behaviors, advisement strategies, legal issues regarding academic advising, advising students receiving federal aid, advising the student athlete, advising international students, advising music students, advising students interested in becoming teachers, ground rules for freshman mathematics advising, guidelines for students taking the English proficiency examination, English placement guidelines, academic program requirements of Smith College of General Studies, and advising preseminary students. Included are articles about advising and resource materials, such as: The Advisor Perception Inventory and results for spring 1986, study tips for the learner, a list of errors leading to academic probation and possible solutions, a checklist on low-achieving advisees, information on taking lecture notes, suggestions on time planning, and a list of advanced-level general electives. A four-page bibliography is appended.
