The purpose of this project was to develop and present a set of recommendations for supplements to the existing Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS) that would apply to environments used by children with physical disabilities. The work was subdivided into six phases: (1) review of selected codes, standards and guidelines; (2) review of ergonomic studies and new products/technologies; (3) review of recent evaluation literature; (4) post-occupancy evaluations of environments serving children with disabilities; (5) development of draft recommendations for standards based on previous project; and (6) preparation of the final technical report presenting results of the previous five phases. Specific technical recommendations provide guidelines for parking, loading ramps, stairs, elevators, doors, lavatories, storage, signage, seating, telephones, food service facilities, and many other physical aspects of environments for use by children with disabilities. Specific site reports are also provided, detailing facilities and accommodations at environments chosen for post-occupancy evaluations. Appendices provide summaries of findings and references, an annotated bibliography, and details of the consensus process and the advisory committee. (Contains 26 references.) (PB)
