The Varieties of Adult Civic Engagement in Adult Learning
Munoz, Linda; Wrigley, Heide Spruck
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n135 p81-87 Aut 2012
Civic engagement, or the practice of democratic deliberation in adult education and learning, asks that adults use their experiences to cooperatively build solutions to the difficult social, economic, and political problems that affect their lives and communities now and into the future. The articles presented in this issue look at the intersection of adult education and learning and civic engagement or democratic deliberation from different perspectives. The common themes of governance, engagement, democracy, and immigrant civic engagement are highlighted by demonstrating how they are evident in the practice and variety of adult civic engagement. The experiences described in this volume reflect both the practice of civic engagement in the day-to-day experiences of immigrants, volunteers, shoppers, and environmental activists as well as the changing methods by which dialogue and democratic deliberation are shared in and with broader audiences. The question of what constitutes civic engagement in adult learning and in the practice of adult education is examined through the broad experiences of engagement that are highlighted in the chapters in this issue.
